ART, IDENTITY & DISCOVERY

Explore! with the National Portrait Gallery

What makes a portrait—and what can it tell us about ourselves? Explore! and the National Portrait Gallery created a hands-on space where young children could investigate those questions through play.

A portrait can be a starting point.

The collaboration introduced the Portrait Gallery’s first space dedicated to children. Designed for ages 18 months to 8 years with an accompanying adult, it connected art with self-expression and discovery.

Activities included tracing silhouettes, posing for a video artwork, and assembling faces from illustrated blocks. Prompts in English and Spanish invited families to explore expression, emotion, and how we see one another.
